Santa Maria Abbey in Cerrate

This Romanesque Abbey, dating back to the 12th century, soars majestically in the countryside just a short distance from Lecce. Legend tells us that it was founded by the Norman King and Count of Lecce, Tancredi, who had a vision of the Holy Virgin between the horns of a dear. The Abbey was subject to several renovation works over the course of the centuries and was eventually turned into a farm. The hut-shaped façade features a central rose window and blind arches that decorate the sides of the building. On the left side, we find a beautiful loggia with pillars bearing figure-shaped capitals; farther ahead is a Renaissance wishing well, built in 1585. The portal stands out for its tall arch, richly decorated with leaves and flowers; it is enclosed in a prothyrum dating to the 13th century, embellished with high reliefs reproducing the Annunciation, the Baptism of Christ, the Nativity, the Epiphany, the Visitation and a Monk praying. The interior is divided by columns enriched with notable capitals into one nave and two aisles that culminate into three apses. The high altar is surmounted by a 1269 ciborium, with Greek inscriptions along the architrave. Most frescos were painted in the 15th and 16th centuries, while some fragments are more ancient and date back to the late 13th century and beginning of the 14th century, while those behind the Baroque altar are in Renaissance style. Close to the Abbey is the Museum of Folk Traditions, which displays, among many exhibits, the frescoed panels of the lateral aisles.
